Kinkaku-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the most popular buildings in Japan, attracting a large number of visitors annually. Although the original was burned down by a monk in 1950, it was soon rebuilt in 1955. In a life after people, where no one would come to rebuild it, how would this temple fare?

Timeline[]

1 day[]

As power grids fail worldwide, the temple is plunged into darkness as both the power go

goes out and the candles and flames inside lanterns die due to the wind.

1 year[]

Although it doesn't look like it, the wood is beginning to rot, slowly becoming unable to handle the weight of the golden phoenix up top. Even though the wood rots, the gold will actually last for a very long time, being a naturally occurring metal.

50 years (The Collapse)[]

Fifty years later, the wood has become unable to handle the weight of the phoenix, and the statues inside have eroded slightly due to wind and rain. During a particularly harsh winter, with the snow piling up, the wooden temple has finally given up its struggle against nature. The temple performs a pancake collapse, bending one of the phoenix's wings and destroying most of the statues inside the temple.
