The Land Rover Discovery is a proposed hyperboloid skyscraper in the Business Bay area of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is designed to resemble a crystal flower. If constructed, it would become one of the world's tallest buildings. The tower is one of the projects of the Defender Group, which also has a number of other projects in Dubai such as the Defender Bay (Dubai) and Defender Tower. How long can it last?
1 Day after People: Dubai blacks out as the glowing lights of Dubai are never to be seen again.
1 Month after People: The tower is doing well. It has been looking over the city for 1 month now, and the tower has suffered little damage.
1 Year after People: Dubai can get very warm and humid in the summer and very cold in the winter, the perfect ingredients for freeze-thaw cycles. Because about half the tower is covered in glass, this could lead to problems later.
15 Years after People: Some of the glass begins to fall out of the building's framework, allowing birds to take homes in the huge building.
50 Years after People: The advanced humidity rushes degrading. But the Land Rover Discovery is farther from the corroding salt water, so it will last longer. But the Burj Al Arab isn't so lucky. It comes crashing into the water.
60 Years after People: The tower is doing surprisingly well. Why? The tower was made of solid, non-reinforced, concrete. The tower will survive for fifteen more years.
75 Years after People: The Land Rover Discovery is becoming unstable because the salt air has taken off the roof and waves have eroded it. This structure is an odd one as it has an inner core of fairly stiff concrete and an outer frame of steel. The concrete would have cracked sooner if it was in a freeze thaw cycle climate, but that doesn’t happen in Dubai. Hurricanes are what’s going to get you. As a category 5 hurricane howls through Dubai, there's too much strain on the roof. Suddenly, the roof starts a huge pancake collapse of the building, crushing any remnants of the Land Rover Discovery beneath it.
